Synthetic drugs

Synthetic drug addiction is the result of frequent consumption of this substance with periodic intoxications showing a compulsive need to consume synthetic drugs, at this stage the person cannot stop consuming by will. The daily agenda and values of the person undergo a radical change, where the intoxication is the priority and other things become secondary (partner, family, children, work, etc.).

People addicted to synthetic drugs change the amount and frequency of their use, from using with a few friends to using by themselves.

The most used synthetic drugs are:
Liquid Ecstasy
Speed (also called: Ice, Crystal, Fire, Glass)

The effects of synthetic drug use in general tend to produce:

Hypersensitivity to touch

It is important to know that sustained use of these substances produces significant side effects such as nausea, tachycardia, hypertension, mental confusion, temporary amnesia, hallucinations, dry mouth, sweating, tremors, headaches, and anxiety. These symptoms can lead to a more complex symptomatology such as:

Myocardial infarction

Epileptic seizures

Cardiac arrhythmias

Cerebral infarction / Strokes

A very serious complication of the consumption of these substances is hyperthermia or “heat stroke”: it consists of an increase in body temperature, gradually associated with a cessation of sweating, cramps, altered mental state, urinary incontinence that can lead to cardiorespiratory arrest and death. This complication occurs most often when it the drug is used in excess and/or mixed with other drugs (especially alcohol).

Long-term use of these substances can lead to significant mental health problems. These substances are highly toxic to one group of neurons in the brain (serotonin neurons). Each use results in countless neuronal deaths in this group of neurons. The consequences for the person in question are:

Decreased sexual desire and anorgasmia (more frequent in men).

Fatigue, sadness, and apathy, which can last for weeks to months.

Problems with memory, concentration, and attention

All these substances can trigger psychotic episodes.

The approach offered by “INICIA” ADDICTIONS TREATMENT is integral it carries out a psychiatric, individual, family and group approach in order to contain the situations related to the relapse of the patient.

The first visit allows us to evaluate the type of therapy that is appropriate for the patient. The professional evaluates whether, given the severity of the consumption, detoxification should be done on an outpatient basis or in a hospital. An addiction psychiatrist will oversee the patient’s health and the medications needed to detox and mitigate the effects of withdrawal syndrome.

Psychiatric visits will continue throughout the detoxification process. Psychological testing, if necessary, will be offered. Testing will also be required to objectively verify that no substance abuse is occurring

In parallel, during detoxification and during the next phase of treatment (dishabituation), the patient will undergo individual and group therapies based on behaviour change. The group therapies are also very helpful in helping the patient regain his or her impaired communication skills and confidence in social skills.

During the detoxification and dishabituation process, family counselling is offered. This counselling is based on cohabitation problems and a concrete intervention on communication conflicts that hinder the patient’s efforts to stop using synthetic drugs.

Contrary to popular beliefs, treatment for designer drug dependence is very effective when properly monitored, achieving the goal of quitting these substances. Despite the fact that in the course of the therapeutic process the patient may experience a specific relapse, a high percentage of patients recover completely and are able to give up designer drugs once and for all.

It is important to note that these treatments are highly effective if done correctly. Detoxification is effective in 100% of cases and rehabilitation is successful in more than 90% of patients who perform the treatment correctly.

If you believe that a member of your family or close person is addicted, the most urgent thing is to get a professional diagnosis where the type of treatment that the patient should follow is advised. There is always a personalized follow-up with high therapeutic intensity.
