COCAINE

WHAT IS COCAINE ADDICTION?

Cocaine addiction is the repeated use of cocaine to the point that the user (called an addict) becomes periodically or continuously intoxicated, has a compulsive need for cocaine, and has great difficulty stopping or voluntarily changing their use of the substance. This leads him/her to obtain cocaine by any means necessary. The addict’s life is dominated using the substance to the exclusion of virtually all other activities and responsibilities. This leads to a deterioration of social relationships and, basically, with their emotional environment (partner, family, children, etc.).

People addicted to cocaine change the amounts and frequency of their use from using with a few friends to using by themselves. They also often need to drink alcohol or sedatives to be able to relax after using and, in practice, they become unable to stop and even if they can go a while without doing so, they will start using again.

HOW DOES COCAINE ADDICTION MANIFEST ITSELF?

Cocaine is a nervous system stimulant that produces the following sensations:

Euphoria is manifested by a feeling of increased physical energy and a sense of greater alertness.

Decreases feelings of fatigue, appetite, and the need to sleep.

OTHER EFFECTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Increased blood pressure and heart rate, resulting in a high risk of heart attacks and brain haemorrhages when using cocaine.

Paranoid thoughts, characterized by the feeling of being persecuted or that other people want to harm them.

Can cause anxiety, panic attacks and severe depression when it wears off.

Can cause sexual impotence in men and frigidity in women.

In addition to the negative effects listed above, there is a significant deterioration in relationships, family relationships, financial ruin, and employment problems.

WHAT COCAINE TREATMENT LOOKS LIKE

The earlier treatment is started, the more likely the patient is to stop using cocaine.

At “INICIA” ADDICTIONS TREATMENT, we work with a motivational orientation, offering individualized processes that allows us to tailor treatment to each patient, with their active participation.

The cocaine treatment offered at “INICIA” ADDICTIONS TREATMENT is extensive and consists of different approaches, adapted to the patient’s profile.

SUCH APPROACHES ARE

Psychiatric monitoring:Visits with a psychiatrist, where the type of therapy appropriate for the patient is assessed. Medical monitoring is done both in terms of medication and the patient’s health status, considering the physical deterioration caused by sustained cocaine use.

Psychological follow-up: Therapies that approach the problem of consumption from a behavioural and biographical point of view, with the aim of producing changes in the person that consolidate abstinence.

Group therapy: Used so that the patient can communicate and share experiences, learn solutions to similar problems faced by other patients, and allow for communicative practice that is often diminished by the effects of the isolation of cocaine use.

Family counselling: We work on aspects of coexistence and intervene in a concrete way on communication conflicts that hinder the efforts of the patient to make changes to maintain abstinence.

If necessary, we have an admission centre to begin treatment.

STOP THE USE OF COCAINE

Contrary to popular belief, treatment is very effective when followed correctly, allowing the goal of quitting cocaine to be achieved.

During the treatment process, the patient may experience occasional relapses, but more than 80% of patients make a full recovery and are able to quit cocaine permanently.

If you suspect that a family member or loved one is addicted, the most urgent thing to do is to get a professional diagnosis where advice is given on the type of treatment the patient should undergo. A personalized follow-up with high therapeutic intensity is always provided.
